2024 Recap: Inclusive Recovery and Job Creation in Ukraine
2024 saw fruitful initiatives in Ukraine, led by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and supported by the Government of Japan as part of the broader initiative "Emergency assistance for 3D-printed prosthetics and job creation in Ukraine." This initiative aims to transform prosthetic manufacturing and the assistive technology sector within the country and create inclusive economic opportunities for all.
Transforming Prosthetic Services with 3D Printing
In April, an innovative training program commenced at the Halychyna Rehabilitation Centre in Lviv. This 8-week course on Digital Prosthetics Engineering introduced ten Ukrainian prosthetists to advanced 3D printing techniques, aiming to transform prosthetic manufacturing in the country. Initially, participants mastered cutting-edge 3D printing and digital modelling, guided by Japanese experts. They then applied these skills practically, crafting prosthetics for 32 veterans. This effort addressed immediate needs and promoted service accessibility through modernization.
Empowering Through Inclusive Entrepreneurship
In June, a Training of Trainers (ToT) program was launched, focusing on inclusive entrepreneurship for internally displaced persons (IDPs) and persons with disabilities (PwD). Conducted over two phases, it prepared 23 participants to train others by emphasizing core entrepreneurial principles and inclusive training methods. The program aimed to ensure active engagement of all participants and highlighted support ecosystems for veterans and PwD, showcasing entrepreneurship opportunities.
Participation in Forums and Key Events
In October, the project team contributed to the "Financial Sustainability and Economic Development of Communities" forum during Ukrainian Resilience Week. The forum addressed local financial challenges and highlighted the importance of economic development and financial sustainability as the backbone of state stability. Additionally, the team actively participated in the European Business Association event titled "Veterans in the Professional Environment" in October, where they delivered a presentation on "Creating Opportunities for People, Supporting Businesses, and Attracting Investment to Foster a Green Economy." This event provided a platform for discussing the integration of veterans and individuals with disabilities into the workforce in Ukraine. The main objective of engagement was to enhance employers' awareness regarding the vast potential workforce among people with disabilities and facilitate their adaptation into the workplace.
Extending Entrepreneurship Education Locally
In December 2024, following the ToT program, entrepreneurship training across Lviv Oblast was launched. The training aimed to benefit 210 individuals and sought to enhance local economic resilience by equipping beneficiaries with the skills to launch and sustain businesses.
The team concludes 2024 with gratitude and ambition to continue such strategic programs and participations in discussions in 2025 to foster entrepreneurial spirit, drive innovation, economic growth, and inclusivity under UNIDO's leadership.
